How do I attach my numbers or letters to an outdoor surface?

How do I attach my numbers or letters to an outdoor surface?

We are asked this question a lot. We have cut thousands of letters and numbers over the past 13 years. We have attached none of them.

First, make sure you are using a wood that can be used outdoors. Read the product descriptions, it amazes me over the years how many people order MDF for outdoor use. It is not going to work. So here are my general guidelines.

SJA Wood Design have three types of wood that can be used outdoors

Pine- will need to be painted, or sealed. It works well for house numbers.

Cedar- recommend if you are going to use stain, not so much for paint. You will need to prime, then paint. Cedar is very porous, it soaks up paint. It can be left unfinished, but is going to turn grey.

MDO- is best for making outdoor signs.

How do I attach? The best answer I can give is silicone based glue.

Best answer is to go to your local paint store, the little guy, not the big box. Ask them. The climate in very cold Minnesota, is not going to be the same as the salty sea area of Florida. Your local paint store will have the best answer.
